The Sudbury Community Garden Network is holding its fifth Annual Sunflower Competition in 2021! Enter to win some neat prizes! More details will be provided later in the summer to confirm whether there will be an in-person event on September 18, 2021. If we cannot hold an event because of Covid-19, we will have some virtual options.
Who can enter?
The competition is open to all residents of Greater Sudbury. Your school may be participating and will provide your class with details if your class is participating.
What are the prize categories?
Tallest Sunflower Plant
The tallest plant will be measured from the base of the stem (not including the roots) to the top of the head. The head will be extended to measure the full height of the plant. If there is an event, we will ask gardeners to cut off the roots to make it easier to measure the stem, and to remove the leaves from the stalk (stem) because only the stalk and seed head will be measured.
Biggest Sunflower Head
The biggest head will be measured as the diameter of the seed head. The flower petals will not be measured or required. Heads should be cut from the stock (unless also entering the same plant in the tallest sunflower category).
Most Unique
Our judges will agree on a most unique sunflower.
Most Heads on One Stalk
The stalk with the most heads will be declared the winner! In the case of a tie, the winner will be decided by a draw.
Best Photo with your Sunflower
Our judges will agree in a best photo with your sunflower.
When will the prizes be awarded?
Judging and prizes will be awarded on Saturday September 19, 2021, location to be announced later.
What seeds can I use?
You can use whatever seeds you want to use. In the past, we distributed seeds to the Sudbury Public Library, but we are unable to do that this year because of the situation with Covid-19.
What are the rules?
- You can use whatever soil, fertilizer, or growing medium you want.
- No one is allowed to tamper with anyone else’s plants, seed, etc.
- Limit is one sunflower per category.
- Open to Greater Sudbury residents.
- Contest ends Saturday September 18, 2021.
