Due to Covid-19, the Giant Sunflower Contest will not be held in 2020. We're hoping to be back next year!
Read our 2019 contest info below to find out what we're hoping to do in fall 2021.
The Sudbury Community Garden Network is holding its Fourth Annual Giant Sunflower Contest in 2019! Enter to win some neat prizes at the Sudbury Farmer's market on September 21, 2019.
Who can enter?
The competition is open to Community Garden users and all residents of Greater Sudbury. You can enter as
- a Classroom or School
- a Community Garden
- an Individual
What are the prize categories?
Tallest Sunflower Plant
The tallest plant will be measured from the base of the stem (not including the roots) to the top of the head. The head will be extended to measure the full height of the plant. We ask that gardeners cut off the roots to make it easier to measure the stem (there will be cutters at the competition if needed). We also ask that the leaves be removed from the stalk (stem) because only the stalk and seed head will be measured.
Biggest Sunflower Head
The biggest head will be measured as the diameter of the seed head. The flower petals will not be measured or required. Heads should be cut from the stock (unless also entering the same plant in the tallest sunflower category).
New in 2019 – Most Heads on One Stalk!
The stalk with the most heads will be declared the winner! In the case of a tie, the winner will be decided by a draw.
When will the prizes be awarded?
Judging and prizes will be awarded at the Sudbury Farmers Market on Saturday September 21, 2019.
What seeds can I use?
You can use whatever seeds you want to use. You can also pick up seeds from any local branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library, while quantities last.
What are the rules?
- You can use whatever soil, fertilizer, or growing medium you want.
- No one is allowed to tamper with anyone else’s plants, seed, etc.
- Limit is one sunflower per category.
- Open to Greater Sudbury residents.
- Contest ends Saturday September 21, 2019
